The Miami Valley School selects new head of school

Washington Township's almost 60-year old private school for Pre-K to 12th grade is getting ready to welcome its new leader. The new school head will leave an out-of state position to move into the Dayton area after the current school year ends.

David Long, the eighth head of school at Miami Valley School (MVS), has been appointed by the Miami Valley School Board of Trustees. He will begin his duties on July 1.

Long is currently assistant head of school for The Galloway School, Atlanta, GA. He will replace current head Elizabeth Cleary who announced that she would be leaving the school at the end the academic year in August 2022, to pursue other opportunities.

Long stated that he and his family were "absolutely thrilled" to move to Dayton, and to join this vibrant community. MVS has blazed the trail in experiential education with its signature Immersion method since 1964. It is exciting to me that MVS in Dayton, Ohio, is at the forefront of education and can be a model for other schools around the country.

Long, who has a career in independent education, also served at Louisville Collegiate School as dean of students for the upper school, department chair and assistant head of upperschool, before becoming head of upperschool. His career began at Sewickley Academy, Pittsburgh, as a history teacher in the upper school.

Long holds a bachelor's in history and secondary teaching from Grove City College. He also has a masters in U.S. History from Duquesne University, and a PhD in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from Harvard University. He is currently enrolled at Arizona State University to earn a doctorate in leadership and innovation. His doctoral dissertation is centered on the hiring of and retention of staff and faculty of color at independent schools.

Radha Reddy said that the Board of Trustees and I unanimously supported David Long's appointment as MVS' 8th Head of School. His deep knowledge of independent schools, his distinguished record as a teacher, administrator and his enthusiasm for The Miami Valley School mission makes us confident that David Long is the perfect person to lead The Miami Valley School in this historic moment.
