Staffing expert: Cannabis companies need to be 'choosy' when they're hiring

Lauren Lewis, co-founder of StaffBuffalo, said that Western New York isn't attracting people at a rapid rate like they do in Nashville and Charlotte. Lewis stated that Niagara University, Niagara County Community College, and Erie Community College all offer cannabis programs. Younger generations are attracted to New York's cannabis industry because of its emphasis on social equity and novelty. They want to feel that their day is part of something larger than just their own. Lewis stated that being in the cannabis industry from its beginnings means that you can learn from the companies' growth. Employers should also look for enthusiasm in their employees. Employers must be careful when hiring, and look for people who are business-savvy to work in highly regulated industries. She said, "You're dealing with very regulated products and a lot regulated procedures." Security is a major concern in the cannabis industry. Lewis stated that you want people who are able to take on different roles and work on different projects. People should look at legacy businesses as a source of talent because they have a lot more experience and knowledge.
