A Basement of Items, a Lifetime of Stories

Three days a week, I work from the press room at One Police Plaza, the headquarters of the New York Police Department in Lower Manhattan. As a reporter covering the Police Department for the Metro desk, I have visited various areas of the building. Recently, I went down to the basement with Sgt. Edward Riley from the office of the Deputy Commissioner for Public Information. Behind a pair of sliding steel doors, there is the office of the Manhattan Property Clerk, where thousands of pieces of evidence are stored, including lost possessions and items recovered from ground zero. There is also a vault containing confiscated guns, cash, and drugs. I was intrigued and agreed to write about it.
